The Learner Services Team at the East Riding College is here to help you across the education and training route appropriate to you.

Canvas

The Canvas VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) serves as a platform for managing and delivering online educational content and resources to students. It consolidates these resources and additional digital tools into one convenient, easily accessible location. Accessible through Office 365 login credentials, Canvas VLE is available to all staff and students of East Riding College.

Success Coaches

Each Higher Education (HE) program assigns a dedicated Success Coach to its students. These coaches, who are degree-educated non-teaching staff members, collaborate with students to address any concerns that may arise during their academic journey.

Their roles encompass serving as the primary point of contact for HE learners, providing assistance to students requiring mitigation, advocating for student needs, offering pastoral support through various channels such as online, telephone, and in-person interactions, as well as providing guidance and support concerning on-campus resources and external agencies and services.

Student Support Officers (SSOs)

Our team of Student Support Officers (SSOs) provides assistance to students who receive the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). Additionally, they extend their support to individuals transitioning from a Level 3 qualification to Higher Education (HE) and who would be eligible for the DSA. This support is available to students facing various challenges including dyslexia, ADHD, autism, among others.

This support aims to enhance study skills such as effective proofreading and extracting relevant information from academic texts. This assistance is accessible once the DSA is approved or evidence from a Level 3 programme is provided.

Disability Officer

The Disability Officer supports all students in completing their DSA (Disabled Students’ Allowance) applications, providing assistance in filling out the necessary forms and obtaining relevant evidence. They also collaborate with external organisations like Student Finance England, the DSA team, and Needs Assessors to support students throughout the application process.

Disability Officers assist with resource allocation and communicate with exam and curriculum staff to ensure appropriate adjustments are in place when needed.

Disability Assessor

The Disability Assessor provides in house assessments for specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. The diagnostic report that is produced as a result of the assessment can not only be used to inform relevant internal staff of support strategies and examination access arrangements that would benefit their students but is essential in providing evidence for Higher Education students to access the Disabled Students’ Allowance on the basis of having a specific learning difficulty.

The assessor liaises closely with both internal staff and external teams such as Needs Assessment Centres to ensure a seamless journey for students from the time they are made known to the assessor (which occurs via many routes), to the point where the application is completed and relevant resources are in place.
